My wife and I came out to the vineyard last Thursday and we had an amazing time. Emily (one of the owners) was the most attentive business owner that I've ever had the pleasure of meeting. We ended up staying for over an hour and purchased a good amount of wine. The wine is delicious and the view from the tasting room is breathtaking.

Also, if end up at the top of Winters Hill when not many people are around you might be lucky enough to get a tour of the new winery that they're building. All in all this was one of the best wine tasting experiences we've ever had. We joined the wine club and are excited about getting our first shipment!

2006 Pinot Noir Dundee Hills

This is full of forest floor, stem, mushroom and light cherry fruit paired with faint baking spice. It’s a lovely, fresh, and complex nose. In the mouth, this has a lovely richness, feeling absolutely round and almost lush on the palate. The flavors of fresh berry fruit are wonderful and paired with great inner-mouth perfumes of mushroom, beetroot, sage, and cherry candy. There is a really nice structural tension in the mouth as well, to the point that you don’t even notice the acidity or the tannins until you look for them. There’s a black cherry medicinal tone on the backend, and the succulent tannins add a hint of refreshing astringency and some stemmy tones that lead to a long, layered, fruit-driven and spice-toned finish. Wonderful Pinot, richly flavored with a lovely texture. 92pts

A raft of impressive recent releases illustrates the steady rise of Winter’s Hill Vineyard as a top-notch Dundee Hills Pinot specialist.

Since 1998 the Gladhart family has produced wine from 35 beautiful vineyard acres on a 150-acre farm. Founded by Peter and Emily , and later joined by son Russell and daughter-in-law Delphine, Winter’s Hill has long been known for solid wines. But when French-born and trained Delphine joined the family and the business as winemaker, the wines began showing more profundity and character, as well as turning critical heads.

Her 2006 Winter’s Hill Pinot Noir is a case in point. Meaty aromas of plump berry fruit are combined with elegantly spicy notes of tea and gentle barrel spice on the nose. In the mouth, complex flavors of cherries, violets, spices, and toast are concentrated and satisfying, without succumbing to cloying density as do so many other 2006 Pinots. And at $29, this wine is well-priced.

Other recent releases have been equally impressive. We very much liked the 2005 Reserve Pinot Noir, and we eagerly look forward to tasting their 2007 and 2008 releases.

In good Oregon tradition, Winter’s Hill is not a flashy brand with slick marketing. Rather, they are family-run and their marketing has a ring of sincere authenticity; it is usually Russell and Delphine who do the pouring at trade events, and when you visit their friendly tasting room it is invariably a member of the family behind the tasting counter.
